In 2023, creative studio Private Island released one of the first AI-generated commercials to gain global attention: “Synthetic Summer.” The experimental beer ad, created entirely with generative AI, quickly became a viral sensation and a cultural flashpoint in discussions about AI in advertising.


The film’s surreal visuals, distorted characters, and uncanny atmosphere divided audiences. While parts of the commercial industry initially reacted with skepticism, the spot rapidly spread across social media and mainstream press. Within days, “Synthetic Summer” was featured by major outlets including The New York Times, BBC News, and the Daily Mail, where it was described as “nightmare fuel,” “joyful monstrosities,” and even “what hell looks like.”


Beyond the shock value, the project marked a turning point in AI commercial filmmaking. It demonstrated how generative video tools could produce fully formed brand content without traditional production workflows. What began as an unsettling experiment soon became one of the most cited early examples of AI-generated advertising.
